LOCATION:Islington square
DESCRIPTION:Invite As part of our educational programme\, we are thrilled to be able to visit a site which brings together a range of design and construction concepts. The location of the site\, its context\, history and brief make Islington Square a highly complex project with numerous lessons we can learn from. Galliard Homes\, in collaboration with CZWG Architects\, has kindly agreed to host our visit to share its experience with attendees. Development overview Islington Square is a £400m mixed-use development\, designed by CZWG architects. Located in the heart of Islington\, it incorporates over 170\,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space. It also features 263 high-quality apartments\, an aparthotel\, a leisure centre\, a cinema and office space. The contractor is Galliard Homes and the developer is Cain International\, a privately held real estate investment firm operating in Europe and the United States. The design CZWG was employed in 2003 to design the redevelopment of the historic northern Royal Mail district office. The buildings are designed to reflect the rich heritage of the sites past yet embrace the character of its local community. The principle entrance to the site is through the Grade II listed former Post Office building which has been carefully restored and modernised. This leads to the adjoining complex of grand Edwardian buildings within their conservation area context. CZWG Architects redeveloped its unique heritage with brand new concepts. Galliard Homes joined the team in 2015 to construct the scheme. The development has been restored to retain the original Edwardian red brick facades\, while new design interventions contrast the existing structures through an architecture of curves. The design of the homes range from studios\, maisonettes to penthouses and incorporate 36% of affordable housing. The outdoor space has been carefully considered with landscaped courtyards and spacious roof gardens.
